Every three years like clockwork you see an article in the Globe or the Freep fashion page talking about how fur is making a comeback, and then you never actually see anyone wearing one. When was the last time anyone you know said they bought a new fur coat?

Now that I think about it, if you're a 20-something university undergraduate, buying a new full-length fur coat would probably be the most over-the-top ostentatious "screw you" fashion statement you could make...I'm surprised no one does it :)

Anyway, the Reiss building is in good shape (it was totally rewired as part of the Smart Winnipeg corridor initiative or some other such 2000-era broadband scheme), so the real estate is probably a much more lucrative play than the business.

...with additional parking to boot ! They make a nice package together. I guess that's why they sat on the King building until now. Wait until they're ready to sell out.

Funny situation regarding fur. It's being promoted as the "green" way to go, (much to the chagrin of the anti-fur lobby).

It is one of the nicer buildings in the Exchange (aside from the purple awning). I'm curious to see what the future will hold for it.

Fake trees made out of real fur is a totally overlooked niche market.

I promise I'll remember you all after I make my first million.

The positive impacts of Winnipeg's economic turnaround are finally beginning to translate into real gentrification. I just hope that the St. Charles drive-thru entrance is rejected.

$2.2 million for the Peck Building. Wow.

To an out-of-towner, that might sound like pocket change for a rather large building in the central part of the city. However, as recently as the late 90s, a lot of Exchange District buildings were virtually worthless. If someone bought a portfolio of properties for a song 15 years ago, they could be sitting on a goldmine right now.

That said, and as one of the people quoted in the articles points out, I hope that the increased values don't give landlords unrealistic expectations as to the prices on their properties. While the trends are positive, you won't see any bidding wars on Exchange District properties anytime soon, and it would be a real hindrance if potential developers were discouraged from excessively high price tags.

Now that there is a distinctly positive trend in the Exchange District, it would be nice to see things move from redevelopment of old buildings to the construction of infill buildings. Apart from the construction of the Waterfront Drive condos, there really hasn't been much happening on that front. It would be nice if some new primarily residential buildings went up west of Princess St. and along Notre Dame...it would really bolster the West Exchange and add more life to the area.

All things considered, it's really impressive to see the level of change that has occurred in the last 15 years in the Exchange District.

Wow. The church of Scientology. Does that mean Winnipeg is going to have a bunch of Tom Cruise wannabes cruising the streets soon?
