Wowzers, a 10 year lease? They must have some major confidence in the Exchange prospering for the long-term. Either that, or somebody gave them a hell of a deal on a lease.
Good start for the makings of a "Design District". As now in that area is Western Paint, Total Lighting, Cosmans, J. Wierer, The Antique Warehouse (not sure if thats the correct name) but its just before Cassidy's, possibly a few more but those are the ones I have shopped at, Colour's Warehouse as well. A couple stores that I would like to see in Winnipeg are Chintz and Co. and Restoration Hardware.
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but Cake Clothing is moving a block west down McDermot...any word on what will be taking its place? The current Cake Clothing site has to be one of the more desirable locations in the Exchange.
When there are events at Old Market Square - things like Jazz Fest, Fringe, etc. - and the city closes off King Street at Bannatyne, is the city responsible for reimbursing parking-lot owners for lost revenue? I noticed during the Fringe that there are two or more Impark lots on King just North of that closure that were empty because of the street closure. Does anyone here park in one of those lots, and did Impark or the city contact and/or compensate you?
This obviously isn't related to development, just a curiosity.
The downtown Exchange District has become a magnet for architects, designers and planners, and no one has felt that pull more than the owners of Scatliff Miller Murray. ... Lisa Holowchuk, executive director of the Exchange District Business Improvement Zone, said there now 27 architecture, interior design, planning, engineering and construction-related firms in the Exchange.
"(That's) a nice critical mass down here," Holowchuk said, adding the number has been growing steadily since the early 1980s, when developers began converting some of the district's old warehouses into office, retail and residential space.
I was outside over the noon hour today and I noticed a huge "Demolition by Neglect" banner on one of Darren Jorgenson's Albert Street properties.
I don't know when the banner went up, but it is appropriately situated a few metres away from one of Winnipeg's emerging Demolition by Neglect case studies, the St. Charles Hotel at 235 Notre Dame Avenue. I took a good look at the place, and it is GROSS. It is obvious that people are forcibly entering the building to use it as a flophouse. The surroundings are disgusting and I can't imagine that anyone seriously interested in rehabilitating that property would let it go to hell like that.
I have filed a complaint as to this property pursuant to the Vacant and Derelict Buildings By-law with the Fire Prevention Branch. We'll see what happens.
This is the St. Charles, StB. It's not one of the properties owned by Jorgenson, but it is adjacent to it.
Anyway, one of the friendly local fire inspectors called me back and said that they've received many compaints regarding this property. However, the building is technically allowed to be occupied by tenants despite the many fire code violations (and poor conditions) inside. I wonder if the health inspectors have paid it a visit recently?
Ah. When you said the banner on one of his properties, I thought that specific building was being "tagged".
And WTF being allowed to exist even with fire code violations? I'm assuming that lawyer-dude who owns the building is getting the crap billed out of him....and considering he's looking for financial backers for his plan, he won't be able to pay those fines, and yes, we have another empty building waiting for something to happen.
How long is it going to take for the city to do something before it is too late?

Sorry, I should've been clearer on that note - the banner was encouraging people to call their councillors about the issue and to join the facebook group opposed to demolition by neglect.
