Why is it that Winnipeg drivers have to go 75klm an hour in town no matter what the conditions. Are they just stupid even with all the money we spend on Eduacation.

agree...it seems like drivers drive faster whenever the winter weather comes our way, it's pretty annoying but at the same time when conditions are good it's ok to go a little faster.

I have the opposite problem. Why do people have to drive 50 in 60 zones, most specifically down Notre Dame or anywhere near a stupid photo radar? It really get my goat.

It's no different in any other city I've lived in. I drive the speed limit and get honked at, (and with me in the right/slow lane) so there's not much you can do really. Not all drivers are like this, and the ones that are are not going to change anytime soon, so no sense getting frustrated over it. Just pray they don't hit you.

Actually, on second thought, if you've driven in any of the eastern european countries, Winnipeg drivers are by far very courteous and law abiding.

Try driving in some places like (not all EE) Buenos Aires, Saudi Arabia, Rome, Beijing, Bahrain and Qatar then return to Winnipeg. You'll realize what I mean. If they are only doing 100 when they rip by you within 2" of your car, you're lucky.

I lent my vehicle to someone from Montreal last week. After driving around Winnipeg for 2 hours she returned my keys and told me how people had tailgated her and honked at her for driving the speed limit. She told me how much safer she felt driving in Montreal. MONTREAL!

It only helped to cement my belief that Winnpeg drivers are among the worst in the western world!

    Safer the Montreal...that's funny.
In the Peg, it seems there are only fast and slow drivers...ones holding up traffic and ones who believe they're at Daytona.

Seems the problem is drivers are inconsistent in this city. We need regular re-testing. On residential streets I often see speeding. On Route 90 I often see people going too slow. Not only that, when we have a limit of 80km/h and a person is in each of the two lanes and both are doing about 60km/h, it is frustrating.

People become major d!cks when they get behind the wheel for some reason. It seems especially bad in this city. When I was in Edmonton, the drivers seemed more relaxed... maybe it's the freeways. When I got back into Winnipeg, I felt the rage setting in as I went from red light to red light.... sigh.

Actually none of those countries are in eastern Europe;)

I find Winnipeg traffic pretty similar to countries like Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. People are speeding just so that they can stop at the next traffic lights, use of turn signal is pretty rare (maybe 50%), running red lights is surprisingly common (I don't trust the lights anymore), etc. There is no certain pattern of traffic behaviour or "flow" of traffic here so it's not possible to predict how others will drive and that makes driving stressful.

Of course it depends on what are you used to. For example I find Spanish traffic relatively good and my girlfriend wouldn't ever drive a car there.

Winter traffic here is pretty bad though. I've never witnessed such bizarre accidents before that I saw during last "snowstorm". I made a mistake to drive to U of M and 8km trip took me more than an hour. On my way back I saw two crashes. One was on University Crescent where some guy just didn't slow down before red light and crashed to a back of another car. Another one happened on Pembina at Daly. This one truck accelerated hard from the red light and passed me from the right even if the driver must have seen that there was lots of traffic. Truck just accelerated and even I saw that he or she will crash to the car on front of him maybe 100 meters before the actual crash. For some reason the truck didn't break sooner than what would have been appropriate on dry asphalt. I don't know whats wrong with people...don't they understand that snow and ice is slippery and you can't drive like it's summer.

Today I will ride my bike to university as I'm not gonna sit in traffic jam for the rest of the day.

    hee hee hee...

One of the things I find problematic here is that many drivers pass on the right. It's something I have been noticing a lot these days - if I have someone riding my tail I like to get out of the way (i.e. move to the right) but it's not always possible to do so immediately. I wait until there is a clear space to change lanes, only to find that the dumbass has pulled into it to burn past me on the inside. If I have my indicator on, that means I want to get out of your way and let you go crash somewhere far away from me!

The other thing that really bugs me is when people don't move in order. It happens when cars in the inside lane have to move to the centre to get around a parked car, barricade, whatever the case may be. Soon there are 3 or 4 cars waiting to move in, and when a gap appears in the moving lane the 3rd or 4th guy pulls out and blocks in the cars waiting in front of him. Drivers here are really no good at waiting their turn.

Driving in larger cities is actually usually easier, except for driving in the downtown core.

I seriously disagree with you on this. Winnipeg drivers are slow and obnoxious. I find too many of them drive 10-15 km/h BELOW the speed limit and in the center of the lane. Many don't signal when turning, and don't realize that IT IS LEGAL TO TURN RIGHT ON A RED LIGHT, unless signage dictates otherwise of course. Edmonton's drivers are slightly better, but not much. I attribute this to having expressways within the city, where higher speed limits are common.

Wonder if we should place more emphasis on driving as part of the test and less on parrele parking. Also maybe we should look at enforcing the rules more ie cops on the roads doing what we pay them to do

I suspect that's an insurance test, more than a survival skill.

Oh now you're going to be called a 'tree hugger' for suggesting accountability. LOL

How many car accidents have been on the news since Friday morning? It's unreal how people continue to drive like morons. This morning on my way to work I saw a guy run a red - like as in the two cars in front of him ran the yellow and by the time he got to the intersection it was already red yet he plowed right on through.

What made the whole thing really awesome was that there was a cop car right there and two cops watched the whole thing. They hit the lights and pulled him over up the block.

    Schadenfreude.

On saturday morning I drove to Grand Beach and I saw four vehicles in ditch. Three of the vehicles were actually far away from the road and I was just wondering how fast you have to drive so that you get your car some 30-40 meters off the road especially when there's some 15-20cm of snow. Obviously you need to do at least 80km/h but who would do that when the conditions are bad?

Pretty beautiful thanks for asking. Very quiet -> good for relaxing. Some more snow and it should be even better.
