Posted By: dustinrPassing on the highway is a major crime deserving of police attention now? If I pass you on the highway doing 110 and you phone the cops on me, you need to get a life.

Never answered my question did you... what crimes or offenses is it okay to call the cops for?

If you or I are on the highway doing 110... why cant the cops be called? does it take 120? 130? 150? no speed at all? what about if we are swerving down the highway in a manner that could lead Mono to believe we are drunk can he call then?

You really dont see the point, do you? He can call the cops all you want, you can for that matter as well. Its a waste of time and resources. I noticed a driver not come to a complete stop at a four way today? Should I be like you two and go tell the police on them? Its about common sense, something it seems not too many people have apparently. It seems pretty easy to tell when to call the cops. Gunshot in the apartment next to you? Yeah, a call would be in order. People street racing doing 140km/hr+ ? Justified as well. Someone safely passing on the highway because you drive like a grandma? Go ahead, but maybe you should consider removing the stick from up your ass first.

I hope Mono doesn't call the cops from his cell phone as he's driving. That's just downright dangerous. :-)

No, he wouldn't do that. Instead he writes down the time, speed, license number, section of HTA then (safely) calls the coppers when he eventually gets home.

File that under the "tried to report a crime, but was turned away" category

The discussion is in context... please anyone tell me where the line needs to be drawn for crimesw to report? Personally I thought the reason we have laws is so that we know the line.. If Mono wants to report EVERY crime he(she?) sees what is the problem with that? Dont like it? Get the crime thrown away..

Whats next? Well it was only 2 punches to the face so I dont need to report it.. no wait my hand only stung a little bit so I should not report the car hitting me.. seriously its a crime feel free to report it without someone saying you need to pull the stick out of your arse. A CRIME IS A CRIME! Why do you think we get police with attitudes like, dont bother telling me I aint gonna do anything about it? Its because the public allows it.
4.
I don't think it was a crime to begin with. I believe the comment was about reporting as a crime someone passing another driver. I'm pretty sure there was no discussion about unsafe driving or assault until you raised it. That is what makes this argument disingenuous.

the point is.. mon believes that since he is traveling at the posted speed limit. Anyone passing him must obviously be breaking the speed limit. Yes that is in fact illegal.

I went looking under the highway traffic act for the language on passing. I could of sworn one could pass over the speed limit if necessary to overtake traffic. Can't be bothered to spend too much time on this idiotic argument.

grumpy, yes, you are somewhat correct, but not in the way you believe.
You MAY pass other traffic traveling in the same direction ONLY if you do not exceed the posted speed limit, and ONLY if they are traveling slower THAN the same limit.
ONLY the police, and only during an emergency where their lights are on, and the siren is activated; may they exceed the posted limit.

So here is the kicker: should any of you see a police vehicle exceeding the posted limit, with no lights or sirens activated, you may pull them over and perform a citizens arrest! ( be sure to have at least 2 people with you to act as witnesses later ok? )

I looked that one up a number of years ago, don't ask me what the statute is, I don't remember the details.

So, just how do you determine if someone is going over the posted speed limit without the aid of sort of measuring device. BOth times that I have gotten speeding tickets, they stated the speed I was going. Tickets have been overturned based on doubt that the method of determing the speed was inaccurate. It has to be specific, not just "I think he was speeding." The same goes for calling the police if someone passes you.

Anyone consider that your speedometer may not be as accurate as it once was. Just cause it says your doing 100 kmh, doesn't necessary you're doing 100 kmh, maybe, its 95 or 103. Better call the cops. Lets get serious.

Exactly the plice are turning enforcement to the camaras and letting more go by as Traffic has been decimated latly for the street unit and Investagetion which is very time consuming . Average time spent arresting One youth to see him coddeled and put back on the street 45 hrs and what do you work in a week .

But if the police car is speeding, wouldn't you have to speed in order to catch up and pull them over? How does that work?

You better hope there aren't any other concerned citizens around you at the time, I guess.

That, or hope they get a red light.
