dustinr? you've never driven in Steinbach or Montreal, or for that matter Toronto, I've drive in all 3, as well as Winnipeg, Winkler, Gimli, Beausejour, Lac du Bonnet, Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Calgary, Edmonton, and a couple places in the States. (may the Almighty have mercy upon my sanity!) Among the absolute worst is Toronto in my opinion, but Steinbach has more "God is my co-pilot" drivers than anywhere else on this planet. Trust me, been there, got out alive.
Come on. Every city's drivers are the worst in th world.
I've said this on another thread in here: The speed limits of today were put in place for the technology of yesterday. Our cars and roads are better today and could stand higher speeds.
Someone already said it: drive the speed you are comfortable at and stick to the right hand lane if you wish to drive below the FLOW OF TRAFFIC.

Posted By: grumpy old manThe speed limits of today were put in place for the technology of yesterday. Our cars and roads are better today and could stand higher speeds.

I, for one, wouldn't want to see increased speeds on roads inside cities.
I know you probably are talking about limited access highways and such, but seeing as how much of the discussion on this thread has turned to city driving, I thought I'd say it.
Many streets (Grant Avenue, Taylor Avenue) could easily handle increased speeds. Grant is four lane divided with a 50kmh speed limit. That, imo, is absurd. I'm willing to bet we'll now see a flurry of posts on roads that are under speed...
There are some streets, like Marion, where there is no point driving over 50 because of how the lights are timed. I don't mind it though, because the traffic flows OK as long as it's not peak rush hour.
The speed limit on Kenaston is really annoying. There's also a part of Plessis south of Dugald that is 50kph because of some Farts who decided to build houses adjacent to an industrial park to save on property taxes and must have known somebody in the highway planning department. Got nailed by a speed trap there once. I was astonished to find out that I was going 15k over the limit. It's not even marked very well.
Speed limits are posted in consideration of the BEST and OPTIMAL conditions! Breaking the law by even a single kmh is still exceeding the limits. Instead of letting people believe that their cars are safer and will protect them, instill in our new drivers good driving habits, and strike fear into their hearts by showing them a few accident victims.
Better time management is key to safety though, leave from where you are in lots of time to get there, even if you are 10 minutes early: better that than killing yourself because you are late.
I know how long it takes me to get from home to anywhere in Wpg, I leave 20 minutes before that limit, and almost 100% of the time, I have lots of time to spare and get organized.

Posted By: MonomintoSpeed limits are posted in consideration of the BEST and OPTIMAL conditions!
Not in my view. Mayhaps at one time. Not so much today.
No, we don't need any more stubborn "I'm doing the speed limit and fully within my rights to impair the flow of traffic" drivers on the roads today. Those kind of drivers are perhaps just as dangerous as those that drive too fast.
I don't expect you will agree with me Monominto. But I've seen the impact too slow drivers have on traffic and fellow drivers. I say just go with the flow...
grumpy old man?? you are the prime candidate for a speeding ticket! laws are to be obeyed! not flaunted no matter what your "grumpy old man" attitude is. I travel at the speed limits because I cannot afford a ticket, and I obey the law. you want to speed? go try the Autobahn in Germany, have fun: no speed limits there.
Even the "60 Second Driver" adds on TV have said that the speed limits posted are for the best conditions.

Posted By: Monomintoare you disputing the Experts at MPI??
I laughed out loud when I read that. I'm just glad I did not have a mouthful of 7up...
But who said I speed Monominto? Leaping to conclusions no? I drive prudently. Last real speeding ticket was in 1990, in Michigan at 3AM in the middle of nowhere. My third speeding ticket in 36 years of driving. I've had a couple tax bills courtesy of speed camera traps. Don't much care. I'm willing to stack the quality of driving against anybody.

Traffic engineers maintain that speed limits should be established according to the 85th percentile of free flowing traffic. This means the limit should be set at a level at or under which 85 percent of people are driving. Numerous studies have shown that the 85th percentile is the safest possible level at which to set a speed limit.
Going north on Main, from Higgins, you have to go at least 60 to catch the green lights.
Timing the lights like that just reinforces speeding, which is just irritating. If the city wants people to drive a certain speed, time the lights so it actually works out as such.

Go forty after you hit the first green at Fort, and you won't stop. I'd rather be driving a bit slower and not stop than driving 60 and hit three reds in that stretch as you may on Portage.
Winnipeg drivers aren't the worst. There are plenty of places where drivers are worse and nothing at all compared with some overseas nations, where driving is always risky. http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/tp/tp3322/2006/page5.htm
hey grumpy, you just alluded to the fact that you "go with the flow" if the "flow" is exceeding the limit, then you are ALL guilty! BAD BOY!! go to your corner!!
as for the rest of you? go home, you can't play with grumpy any more!

what kind of fascist are you, where everything has to be to the letter of the law?
