I have heard of zero tolerance in the US. Probably more of a cash grab then anything. It also gives the cops a reason to pull just about anybody over. Once pulled over...

Cops here can pull anyone over anytime they want to inspect the vehicle and drivers documents.

I was referring to the US. I understand they need a reason there.

Not really. I think there has been some court decisions that prevent them searching the car without a reason, but to inspect the vehicle for compliance with the traffic act, drivers license and insurance, any time.

They need a reason here. That has been established firmly many years ago.

Almost got hit by a car riding home the other day. Driver should realise that turn signals actually serve a purpose. If you don't turn your right-turn signal on, I'm going to keep going through the intersection. The chick got a mouthfull and a couple of hand gestures from me.

I also came across a cyclist accident yesterday. Luckily the cyclist wasn't hurt (really lucky considering she wasn't wearing a helmet). I didn't see the accident, but the bike provided no doubt. Neither did the cyclist (and boyfriend? witness?) yelling at the driver that they weren't looking where they were going.

I really wonder what the tipping point will be to raise this to a higher level of public consciousness.

I have seen this scenario all too often with both the driver and the cyclist at fault in a number of occasions.

In fast moving traffic (cars passing cyclists) it is almost always the drivers fault. In slow moving traffic I have seen cyclists try to cut in front of traffic by riding between cars and the curb only to be sandwiched when the light turns green and the car they are next to tries turning right. Most drivers don't naturally shoulder check when they are in the curb lane turning right.

Very true, Sputnik, I will plead guilty to not doing a shoulder check, but I ALWAYS check the side view mirror on the passenger side. I've recently managed to avoid striking some cyclists even by just doing that.

I've been pulled over for a seatbelt check in Wpg, no problems there; we all had them on. No vehicle search was done, but if they'd asked for permission, I would have agreed on the spot.
